Grammage is mass per area
No. 80 gsm is a grammage statement, meaning nominal grams per square metre. It is not a thickness in micrometres. Two papers can share 80 gsm while differing in bulk, finish, opacity or caliper. None of our generic paper-edge photographs is a thickness measurement, and we have not used a micrometer on a received sample.
Caliper needs separate evidence
If a printer path or filing system has a thickness requirement, look for the exact product’s current caliper specification in the appropriate unit. Do not invent a universal 80 gsm thickness or substitute a different manufacturer’s technical sheet. Keep nominal tolerance and test method where the source supplies them;missing caliper remains unknown. The Navigator retailer “Item Gauge” field itself repeats80 gsm, which is not a caliper measurement.
Do not turn nominal values into shipment mass
Multiplying nominal sheet area by grammage can describe a theoretical paper-mass calculation, but it does not establish packaged shipment weight or dimensional delivery charges. Wrappers, carton material, tolerances and moisture are additional factors. Our purchasing tools intentionally compare supported sheet and ream quantities rather than charging by a made-up box mass.
Read the exact media range
Brother’s exact HL-L2400DW reference also demonstrates why a weight range must retain its paper path. Standard-tray and automatic two-sided limits differ. Sharing the 80 gsm nominal value does not eliminate other format, type or condition requirements. Verify the current manual for your actual machine instead of turning one grammage number into universal compatibility.
A purchase case to keep explicit
A buyer asking whether a thicker-feeling stock will fit a device should seek caliper and media instructions, not convert gsm into micrometres by a generic formula. A nominal mass-per-area specification does not establish a measured finished sheet. Keep a supplier’s tolerance and your own future measurement method distinct.
